On a cold Sunday, some MapAid volunteers met up for lunch at Henley-on-Thames to meet US-based Prof. Kathryn Laskey and her family, who came to the UK for a short visit.
Prof. Kathryn has been a Professor of Systems Engineering and Operations Research at George Mason University and has been instrumental in setting up our Modeling Optimal Drilling Locations [MODL] project.
This project is a collaboration with the Water Technology Institute at Arba Minch University with a view to build an AI-led prototype system that combines groundwater sensor data with existing hydrogeological data, to help small farmers in Ethiopia identify best locations to drill shallow boreholes for sustainable crop irrigation.
This prototype is reaching its ground truthing stage, which will test the accuracy of the algorithm and inform future development.
