Malawi is currently locked in the grip of a devastating, record-shattering El Niño climate emergency that has triggered an acute water and food security crisis. As severe droughts cause shallow water tables to drop precipitously, unlined domestic pit latrines frequently contaminate these remaining shallow aquifers. This biological contamination transforms critical, otherwise properly placed community wells into deadly hazards, driving a stubbornly endemic cholera crisis that actively threatens the lives of millions.

Project MapAid Changu is a groundbreaking initiative designed to deploy advanced predictive mapping to protect shallow groundwater aquifers. To ensure this technology remains permanently in Malawian hands, we are launching an independent fundraising campaign to raise $25,000 to establish the permanent Sustainable Knowledge Center.
We are driven by a two-fold, vital mission: first, to break the cycle of cholera. If we can save just one life through this intervention, it is hugely worth it. Yet, our defense does not stop at public health; we are equally committed to safeguarding water security for small-plot agriculture—the absolute lifeblood of Malawi’s economy and food security. By protecting these shallow aquifers from collapsing and becoming contaminated, we protect both the families who drink from them and the smallholder crops that feed the nation.
To secure true data sovereignty, this $25,000 campaign establishes a permanent academic network—the Sustainable Knowledge Center—across three of Malawi’s premier universities, capturing the country’s diverse terrains:
